在宜花交界的和平溪是部分水上活動愛好者會去的溯溪地點，而在2日下午1時許，有一支7人組成的溯溪隊伍，其中一名36歲的鍾姓女隊員溺水。花蓮縣與宜蘭縣消防局入山搶救，但因地面部隊從澳花村徒步挺進事發地點，需費時3至4小時，且山區通訊較差，因此緊急申請空勤總隊加入救援。直升機從下午1時51分從花蓮機場起飛，進入事發山區搶救，並將鍾女送至花蓮慈濟醫院。
